new lock replacement

If you are searching for lock replacement, you may have lost your keys, moved into a new property, experienced a break-in, or simply have an old or unreliable lock that needs changing.

Watchdog Locksmiths provides professional door lock replacement across North London, Greenford and the Surrounding areas. Our DBS-checked locksmiths replace locks on residential and commercial properties and can advise on the most suitable replacement for your door, security requirements and budget.

We work with common locking systems including Euro cylinders, rim cylinders, night latches, mortice locks and multipoint locking systems.

If your existing lock can be repaired safely, we will explain that option too. If replacement is the better choice, we will explain what is required and provide a clear quote before carrying out the work.

With no call-out fee, you pay for the locksmith work required rather than simply paying for somebody to arrive.

Local Lock Replacement Services

There are many reasons why a door lock may need replacing.

Watchdog Locksmiths can help with:

  • Front door lock replacement
  • Back door lock replacement
  • Euro cylinder replacement
  • Rim cylinder replacement
  • Mortice lock replacement
  • Night latch replacement
  • uPVC and composite door lock replacement
  • Locks damaged during an attempted burglary
  • Replacement after lost or stolen keys
  • Worn or repeatedly failing locks
  • Moving-home lock changes
  • Security upgrades
  • High-security anti-snap lock installation
  • Commercial lock replacement

Our locksmith will assess the existing lock and door before recommending the appropriate replacement rather than automatically fitting unnecessary hardware.

When Should You Replace a Door Lock?

You do not need to wait until a lock completely fails before replacing it.

A lock replacement may be worth considering if your key has become difficult to turn, the lock regularly sticks, the cylinder feels loose, the mechanism is badly worn or the lock has already been damaged.

There are also situations where the existing lock may work perfectly well but changing it is still sensible.

For example, you may want to change your locks if:

  • You have recently moved home
  • Your keys have been lost or stolen
  • You do not know who has copies of your keys
  • A tenant or previous occupant has moved out
  • The property has suffered a break-in or attempted break-in
  • Your current locks do not provide the level of security you want
  • Your home insurance policy specifies particular lock standards

If you are unsure whether your lock needs repairing or replacing, Watchdog can inspect it and explain the options.

Just Moved Home? Consider Changing Your Locks

Moving into a new home is one of the most common reasons for replacing door locks.

Even when every set of keys has apparently been handed over, you cannot always know how many additional copies may exist.

Previous owners, tenants, cleaners, contractors, neighbours or managing agents may have been given keys at some point.

Replacing the locks gives you control over who can access your new property.

Watchdog can inspect the main entry doors and replace the locks where required, including upgrading older cylinders to higher-security alternatives.

It is also a useful opportunity to check whether the locks fitted to the property are appropriate for the requirements stated by your home insurer.

Lock Replacement After Lost or Stolen Keys

Losing a key does not always mean somebody knows which property it belongs to, but where there is a realistic possibility that your address could be identified, replacing the affected lock can remove the risk.

The same applies to stolen keys.

A Watchdog locksmith can identify which lock needs replacing and, where appropriate, change the cylinder without unnecessarily replacing the complete door locking system.

If several Watchdog-compatible locks are being fitted, you can also ask about keyed-alike locks, allowing multiple compatible locks to operate from the same key.

Upgrade to a High-Security Lock

Replacing an older lock is also an opportunity to improve the physical security of your door.

For suitable Euro-cylinder doors, Watchdog can install the Watchdog 3 Star ALPS cylinder, a BSI Kitemark 3-Star security cylinder designed to resist common methods of attack including:

  • Lock snapping
  • Picking
  • Bumping
  • Drilling
  • Twist attacks

Our locksmith can assess whether a high-security cylinder is suitable for your existing door and locking mechanism.

Being Protected by Watchdog means choosing security that is appropriate for the property rather than simply replacing an old lock with another basic lock.

Does Your Lock Meet Your Home Insurance Requirements?

Your home insurance policy may include conditions relating to the locks fitted to external doors.

The exact requirements depend on your individual insurer and policy, so you should always check your policy wording rather than assuming that a particular lock automatically guarantees compliance.

If you are replacing an older lock, Watchdog can identify the type currently fitted and discuss suitable BSI-rated and higher-security replacement options.

For timber doors this may include a BS3621 mortice lock, while suitable uPVC and composite doors can often be upgraded with a 3-Star Euro cylinder.

How Much Does Lock Replacement Cost?

The cost of replacing a lock depends on the type of lock, the replacement hardware required and the condition of the existing door and mechanism.

Watchdog’s current standard pricing includes:

Standard Rim or Euro Cylinder Replacement — from £69.99

Includes supply and fitting of a standard 1-Star replacement.

High-Security Rim or Euro Replacement — from £89.99

For customers upgrading to a higher-security option.

BS3621 Mortice Lock Installation or Replacement — £129.99

Dependent on the door type and existing installation.

If additional work is required because the door or locking mechanism is damaged, your locksmith will explain this before proceeding.

Watchdog provides clear pricing and no call-out fee, helping you understand what you are paying for before the work begins.

A Word from Paramjit, Director of Watchdog Locksmiths

“People often think about replacing a lock only when it stops working, but there are plenty of other reasons to change one. Moving home, losing a key or discovering that an older lock offers very little protection are all good reasons to review your security. We’ll look at the door first, explain what actually needs replacing and make sure the new lock is suitable for the property rather than fitting something unnecessarily..”

Valsai what a life saver. I walked out of my house and pulled the front door closed and literally milli-seconds later realised that I had left my door keys on the side and now I've locked myself out great. Panic set in but I then remembered seeing a locksmith near were i live on Greenford road and (luckly i had my car keys at the time) so I drove down to thier office as I couldn't remember thier name but had driven past thier offices hundreds of times, saying good to know, but shouldn't need to use them!!!. Well today was that day. So I dropped in, I didn't have to wait long, and was greated by a helpful staff member who talked me through the booking process via WhatsApp, essy. I booked a locksmith via thier WhatsApp in the shop. it was confirmed in circa 5-10mins, I then drove back home 20mins later arriving back to be greated by one of the locksmiths waiting. He greated me as Valsai and talked me through the various options he had for trying to get me back in with the very, very, very last distructive option of having to drill out the lock, which neither of us realy wanted. which was a blessing to hear as if you've ever watched rogue traders you'll understand. This company in my eyes are 100% not that, nice feeling to have when your in such a position what ever time of the day. Valsai, was chatty and sincere about his work and reassuring to me that he was determined to get the lock open in under 30mins, which he did which was a relief. Prior to paying he offered me an option to purchase one of their upgrade serial linked locks, which if you did what I did, all you need do is go down to thier office with ID and the key reference and they will cut you a replacement key based, which is less than it cost for an emergency call out, to me value for money. I declined as funds a bit tight now more so due to this issue, but he wasn't pushing for a sale, he did advise if I changed my mind I could just go back to the office and pick one up there. Definitely thinking about it now, its cheaper than an emergency call out even if its in norm working hours.. Again as I have already said, these guys are definitely 5 star and actually come across as all genuine locksmiths...One thing I've learnt from today is check out registered locksmiths in your area who offer the registered lock system because it will save you money in the long run, even if you never need to call them ou, its peace of mind, thanks.

Our bathroom door was jammed shut due to a faulty lock. Called Watchdog and they came within 30 minutes. Vatsal was brilliant- efficient, honest, tidy and got us into the bathroom! They actually answered the phone which was something I didn't find when calling around (needing to leave messages and wait for someone to respond when you're in need is frustrating!). I was also able to communicate via whatsapp which was very helpful. They were upfront about their pricing and it was reasonable. If I need a locksmith again I'll definitely call Watchdog. :)

Very disappointing experience. On the phone, I was told the service fee was £55 and that locks start from £30. When the locksmith arrived, he told me £150 was only for a “poor quality” lock, while the other options were £250 or £350. When I refused these prices and asked to cancel, I was then told I still had to pay £55 just because he had come to my address. This was not clearly explained to me when I booked. The pricing over the phone was very misleading compared with what I was actually quoted when the locksmith arrived. I would not use this service again.

Vatsal came and fixed the locks on two doors. One required a mechanism change and the other a new lock. All the work was completed without fuss. He gave advice and was really helpful. I’d definitely recommend d them.

I had some problem with the door mechanism. I tried getting in touch with other locksmiths but nobody turned up. Happened to get through watchdog locksmiths on a whatsapp number. Quick and easy reply, advised me properly and booked appointment instantly. The time slot given to me was 8.30 am to 9.30 am and the technician Vatsal was very punctual right at 8.30am. He was friendly and helpful and in no time he fixed the door lock. Watchdog locksmiths are reliable, priced reasonably and quick in providing services.

How much does it cost to replace a lock?

The price depends on the type of lock and replacement required. Watchdog currently lists standard rim or Euro cylinder replacement from £69.99 and high-security replacement from £89.99. More complex locks and mechanisms may cost more.

Can a locksmith replace just the cylinder?

Yes. On many doors, replacing the cylinder is enough and there is no need to replace the entire locking mechanism. The locksmith will assess the existing system first

Should I replace my locks when I move house?

It is worth considering because you cannot always know how many copies of the old keys remain in circulation. Changing the locks gives you control over who has access to your property.

Should I change my locks if I lose my keys?

If there is a possibility that the lost keys could be connected with your address, replacing the relevant lock can remove the risk of somebody using them to enter your property.

Can you replace a uPVC door lock?

Yes. Depending on the fault, this may involve replacing the Euro cylinder, gearbox or complete multipoint locking mechanism.

What type of replacement lock should I choose?

That depends on your door, existing locking system, security requirements and insurance policy. A locksmith can inspect the door and recommend suitable options.

Can I upgrade to an anti-snap lock?

Yes. Suitable doors can be upgraded with high-security cylinders, including the Watchdog 3 Star ALPS cylinder.

Do replacement locks meet home insurance requirements?

Different insurers specify different requirements. Watchdog can fit recognised lock standards including BS3621 mortice locks and BSI 3-Star cylinders, but you should check the specific requirements stated in your own insurance policy.

Do you charge a call-out fee for lock replacement?

No. Watchdog Locksmiths does not charge a call-out fee. You will be given information about the work and pricing before proceeding.

Can you replace several locks so they use the same key?

Yes, depending on the lock types being installed. Ask about Watchdog keyed-alike options if you would prefer compatible locks around your property to operate from one key.
